Prayers
and Poems for November
Evening
Song
Soft
falls the night,
The day grows dim,
To Thee I lift my evening hymn,
O Lord of dark and light.
My
hands I raise,
A little spire,
And send my voice up high and higher
To Thee in happy praise.
For
home and friend,
For books and toys,
For all the countless loves and joys
That Thou dost daily send.
Close
Thou my eyes,
That when the day
Returns once more from far away,
I may rejoicing rise.

Grace
and Thanksgiving
We
thank Thee, Lord, for quiet upland lawns,
For misty loveliness of autumn dawns,
For gold and russet of the ripened fruit,
For yet another years fulfilment, Lord,
We thank Thee now.
For
joy of glowing colour, flash of wings,
We thank Thee, Lord; for all the little things
That make the love and laughter of our days,
For home and happiness and friends, we praise
And thank Thee now.

Look
to the Lord
Look
backward; see Christ dying for you.
Look inward; see Christ living in you.
Look upward; see Christ praying for you.
Look forward; see Christ coming for you.
Anon
Life
is not a bed of roses, but
.
Life
is not a bed of roses
BUT
Gods hand will be upon you.
His love will cover you.
His grace will keep you.
His compassion will sustain you.
His strength will strengthen you.
His hand will guide you.
And his arms will surround you.
He will go before you.
He will also bring up the rear.
He will provide, sustain and bless you.
He will wipe away your tears.
He will be your light in the darkness.
He will give you Wisdom.
He will be your Healer and Defender.
Life is not a bed of roses
BUT
Christ
is all that you need.
He was, He is, and always will be.

At
Night
Lord
Jesus, you are light from eternal lights.
You have dissolved all spiritual darkness
And my soul is filled with your brightness.
Your light makes all things beautiful.
You
lit the skies with the sun and the moon.
You ordered night and day to follow each other peaceably.
And so you made the sun and the moon friends.
May I be friends with all whom I meet.
At
night you give rest to our bodies.
By day you spur us on to work.
May I work with diligence and devotion,
That at night my conscience is at peace.
As I
lay down on my bed at night,
May your fingers draw down my eyelids.
Lay your hand of blessing on my head
That righteous sleep may descend on me.
Gregory of Nazianzus (329 389)
