St. Philip’s Sunflower Competition

Congratulations to Mrs. Reynolds for winning St. Philip’s Sunflower Competition.  We had a wonderful response to the competition and hope we provided a source of fun throughout the summer months.  Not all the entrants were as successful as Mrs. Reynolds; some seedlings had succumbed to the slugs after a week or so.  Some blamed the dry weather, some even suspected foul play by a partner determined to prove they could grow the best flower!

We were entertained at church each week by stories of sunflower heads as big as manhole covers and one gentleman, who is obviously a fisherman, told me his neighbours were complaining because his sunflower was blocking out the sun!  When it came down to it, though, it was Barbara Cook’s mum who proved to have the greenest fingers.  It was a close run thing as Margaret Standen’s flower was only two centimetres smaller.  During the coming winter months I suggest you read up on the care of sunflowers because I will be throwing down the gauntlet again next spring: CAN YOU GROW THE SUNFLOWER WITH THE BIGGEST FLOWER HEAD?
